COP16

COP16 is a crucial event for global biodiversity conservation, with nearly 200 countries in attendance. The conference will focus on commitments and initiatives from major companies to accelerate compliance with the Global Biodiversity Framework, particularly Goal 15, which aims to promote accountability among large companies and financial institutions regarding biodiversity.

LIFE Coalition

Launched in December 2022 during COP15 on Biodiversity in Montreal, Canada, the LIFE Coalition for Business and Biodiversity consists of a group of companies committed to accelerating the integration of biodiversity into business through concrete actions and transformative solutions. By joining forces, these companies can expedite the transition to a more sustainable future.

Itaipu Binacional played a pivotal role in the development of the LIFE methodology by being one of the first organizations to implement and validate it. As a result, this methodology became attractive to the hydroelectric sector and contributed to the creation of specific criteria tailored for large-scale infrastructure projects.

For a decade, Itaipu has employed LIFE metrics to measure and certify its positive impacts on biodiversity. As a key indicator of its overall environmental management, this practice has established a benchmark for comparable initiatives in the sector. Itaipu’s experience has been instrumental in demonstrating how the LIFE methodology can be effectively applied to projects that significantly interact with natural resources.

Among companies adopting the LIFE methodology for business and biodiversity, Itaipu consistently achieves the highest scores for biodiversity in Brazil. Its performance is approximately ten times above the minimum threshold required for Nature-Positive certification, underscoring the effectiveness of Itaipu’s socio-environmental initiatives in aligning with the objectives of the Convention on Biological Diversity.
