Itaipu takes the lead in the energy transition agenda, says Enio Verri

The Brazilian General Director gave, this Monday (30), a press conference to journalists who will cover the G20 meetings, throughout this week, in Foz do Iguaçu (PR)

Itaipu Binacional stands out as a protagonist in the global debate on energy transition, argued the Brazilian CEO, Enio Verri, in a press conference on Monday morning (30), at the Executive Center. Throughout this week, the Director will be fulfilling a broad agenda during the ministerial meeting of the G20 Energy Transitions Working Group, in Foz do Iguaçu (PR). During the same period, the city will host the 15th edition of the Clean Energy Ministerial (CEM) and the 9th edition of Mission Innovation (MI), also with the participation of Itaipu’s representatives.

“We stand for a Federal Government’s policy in this energy transition agenda. The first plant that addresses the issue of electricity production accompanied by environmental preservation is Itaipu”, stated Enio. “This has given us, over these 40 years, an accrual of experiences, successes, and exchange of experiences with other countries, which gives us this hallmark.” On September 18 and 19, the Director was part of the Brazilian delegation at the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) Summit, held at the United Nations (UN) headquarters in New York (USA). During his participation, he spoke about the company’s actions in implementing the SDGs. As an example, Itaipu shared the work of systematizing its programs in line with the SDGs.

For Enio, this proves Itaipu’s relevance in the topic. “We have become a player that plays an effective role in relations, which justifies our presence at the UN Assembly, justifies the debate we hold with other international organizations. And we have begun to show what we do, with great pride, as we, at the same time, learn a lot from the experience of other countries around the world.”

Other highlights from the Director

– Brazil is at the forefront of clean energy: “Brazil is debating the construction of clean, cheap and high-quality energy sources, and the construction of alternatives, since hydroelectric power is our hallmark, but we have grown in relation to the rest of the world in the production of wind and photovoltaic power. We also have experiences with biomass, green hydrogen and synthetic oil.”

– New fronts for Itaipu: “We launched what we call synthetic oil, which is aviation kerosene. We have a large research unit here, in partnership with the Ministry of Ports and Airports, the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation and even with German groups that are jointly investing so that we can create this research center. And finally, what is being built now is the production of solar energy in the run-of-river, in the reservoir.”

– Investment in innovation “What is needed at this time is for innovation to be the result of a global debate and for the result to be public and socialized. Otherwise, we end up developing countries that think about science, that research, and other countries that train engineers to assemble what other countries think. This creates a dependency, a subordination of one country over another.”

– G20 parallel meetings: “From tonight until Thursday, there will be several parallel meetings that store information, documents, debates. Normally, the ministries’ advisory services, institutions, and entities that will be here will transform them into documents that will supply the ministers for the meeting on Friday. Normally a lot comes out of this.”
