Itaipu Binacional kicked off the day of discussions at the Brazil Pavilion program during the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP 29), which is taking place from November 11 to 22 in Baku, Azerbaijan. The legal director, Luiz Fernando Delazari, participated in two panels on Wednesday, November 13. The first, moderated by the Superintendent of Renewable Energies, Rogério Meneghetti, opened the activities at the Brazil Pavilion, located in the Blue Zone of COP 29.

In this panel, titled “The virtuous cycle of biogas in agri-food systems,” the participants answered questions about how the integration of biogas into agri-food systems can improve the sustainability of rural areas and contribute to reducing greenhouse gas emissions. They also pondered on the barriers to adopting biogas in these systems and discussed what public policies are needed to promote the expansion of biogas in the agricultural sector.

The panel was attended by, in addition to Delazari and Meneghetti, the Head of the Renewable Energies Division at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Laís Garcia; the Executive Director of the Global Biogas Alliance, Charlotte Morton; the Honorary Advisor of the Women in Biogas Network, Maria João Rolim; and the Industrial Development Specialist Fiona Skinner, from the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO).

The second panel addressed the theme: “Water Resources: Successful Projects Driving Adaptation to Extreme Events.” The goal was to present and discuss strategies for revitalizing river basins, the use of information systems, and nature-based solutions that have contributed to reducing vulnerabilities associated with water resources.

Delazari presented Itaipu’s efforts to ensure water quality, particularly actions led by the Coordination Directorate. “Itaipu is a reference in controlling reservoir sedimentation, due to our concern with its long-term sustainability. The more we take care of water in a systemic basin context, the more efficiently we can use it over time,” he explained.

The panel was moderated by the Superintendent of Environmental Public Policy Management at the Secretariat of the Environment and Water Resources of Tocantins, Marli Santos. Also participating were the Governor of Espírito Santo, Renato Casagrande; the Secretary of State for the Environment and Water Resources of Tocantins, Marcello de Lima Lelis; and the Business Director at Codex Remote Sensing Space Sciences and Digital Imaging, Venícios Santos.
