Between September 30 and October 4, Foz do Iguaçu (PR) will host the 15th edition of the Clean Energy Ministerial (CEM) and the 9th edition of Mission Innovation (MI), which will take place simultaneously with the G20 Energy Transitions Working Group meeting. The CEM15/MI-9 program will include a combination of closed and open ministerial meetings, plenary sessions, panels, dialogues, and technical visits. The aim is to discuss concrete actions to make clean energy accessible and accelerate energy transitions.
CEM and MI are global coalitions that bring together governments, businesses, and research institutions to accelerate the innovation and deployment of clean energy technologies worldwide. While CEM focuses on public policies and concrete actions to facilitate the energy transition, MI emphasizes research and development of new clean technologies.
These meetings are important not only for discussing public policies and innovations but also for strengthening international cooperation in the fight against climate change. Recent extreme weather events, such as the floods in Rio Grande do Sul and the successive temperature records in Brazil and around the world, highlight the urgency of accelerating the development and transition to the use of clean and renewable energy.
Itaipu’s participation in the event reinforces its commitment to the energy transition and the construction of a sustainable future. Itaipu Binacional is a practical example of sustainable generation, investing in research and innovative projects in the field of renewable energies, serving as an important model for other global initiatives seeking to implement innovative energy solutions.
‘Our partnership began in 2023, with a preliminary CEM/MI meeting held in Rio de Janeiro, followed by the sending of Itaipu representatives to Goa (India), the host of the Energy Transition meeting in 2023, and over a year of periodic meetings to acquire expertise. This process was crucial for ensuring a successful exchange of experiences,’ explained Ligia Soares, head of Itaipu’s office in Brasília.
Clean Energy Ministerial
The Clean Energy Ministerial (CEM) is a global forum launched in 2010 that brings together countries, businesses, and experts with the mission of promoting and accelerating the transition to the use of clean energy technologies.
A key aspect of the CEM is its collaborative approach, involving not only governments but also the private sector and non-governmental organizations in the pursuit of a rapid transition to a clean energy economy. The CEM aims to share policies, programs, and best practices in renewable energy among its 29 member countries.
In its 14 years of activity, it has facilitated important discussions on sustainable bioenergy, acceleration of research on electric vehicles, and the use of hydrogen as a clean energy source, among other topics.
The “Ask an Expert” service from the CEM’s Clean Energy Solutions Center provides free assistance to developing countries in implementing clean energy policies, utilizing a global network of experts. Since 2011, it has responded to over 400 requests in 90 countries, helping to develop regulations and strategies to promote energy efficiency and renewable technologies.
Mission Innovation
Mission Innovation (MI) is a global initiative launched in 2015 with the goal of accelerating public and private investment in clean energy innovations. Its main purpose is to make clean energy more accessible and attractive for everyone, supporting the goals of the Paris Agreement and moving towards zero emissions.
Funded by member countries—comprising 23 nations plus the European Commission—MI mobilizes billions of dollars annually for research and development projects in clean energy. MI also collaborates with various international organizations and financial institutions, such as the European Investment Bank, to leverage additional funding and expertise.
Some of its objectives include: mobilizing innovation actions through global missions to reduce costs and scale up clean energy solutions; promoting partnerships with international organizations to accelerate innovation, increase investment, and demand for new clean energy technologies; and sharing knowledge to support all countries in these transitions.
