Initiative is part of Itaipu Mais que Energia (More Than Energy) program actions and aims to reduce carbon emissions and achieve the goals of the 2030 Agenda
Itaipu Binacional will finance the purchase of 42 electric vehicles and the same number of charging stations (called electric stations) for city halls in the Northwest and Southwest regions of Paraná. The objective is to foster the renewal of municipal fleets with more sustainable vehicles, contributing to the reduction of carbon emissions and achieving the goals of the United Nations 2030 Agenda. The value of the investment will be R$8.9 million.
The initiative is part of Itaipu Mais que Energia (More Than Energy) program actions and is foreseen in the agreements signed with four consortia of municipalities in Paraná: Intermunicipal Public Consortium for the Sustainable Development of the Southwest Border Region (Cifra); Intermunicipal Consortium of APA Federal do Noroeste (Comafen); Intermunicipal Consortium for the Conservation of Biodiversity in the Xambrê and Piquiri River Basin (Cibax); and Intermunicipal Consortium for the Conservation of the Remnants of the Paraná River and Areas of Influence (Coripa).
The manager of Itaipu’s Operational Support Division, João Paulo Bueno do Prado, said that the consortia should bid for the acquisition of the vehicles, depending on the interest of the municipalities. All technical specifications have already been passed on by Binacional – the charging stations, for example, should allow recharging at high and medium speed. “Just adapt the information and publish the bidding notice. Whoever offers the best value for money wins the lot. Our expectation is that electric vehicles will be on the road in the first quarter of 2025.”
According to him, renewing the city hall fleet with electric vehicles could contribute to the emergence of new businesses in the interior of the State, based on the low-carbon economy. He mentions the installation of dealerships, currently concentrated in large cities, and the construction of a supply infrastructure between municipalities, which will allow travel with 100% electric vehicles.
Prado also recalled that Itaipu was a pioneer in the country in research and development of electric mobility solutions. “Today, the electric vehicle is a reality accessible to the consumer, but Itaipu was already worried about this way back in 2000s. The company contributed to the way people see technology”, he concluded.
Furthermore, Itaipu Binacional is bringing the G20 to Foz do Iguaçu in October, recognizing the importance of the event for Brazil. Holding the G20 in the city not only reinforces the country’s commitment to the energy transition and sustainability, but also highlights Itaipu’s leadership in green initiatives. This global event will be a crucial platform to showcase Itaipu’s innovative projects, such as the electrification of municipal fleets and floating solar plants, demonstrating how such actions can be replicated in other parts of the world, aligning with global goals to combat climate changes.
