Correios Launches Commemorative Stamps at Itaipu’s Booth during COP30

Two stamps were launched, one in honor of photographer Sebastião Salgado and another marking the participation of Itaipu and Itaipu Parquetec in the Climate Conference.

Correios (Brazilian Postal Service) launched two commemorative stamps on the morning of Tuesday (11th) at Itaipu’s booth in the Green Zone of COP30 in Belém. The first stamp pays tribute to photographer Sebastião Salgado, who passed away last May. The second marks the participation of Itaipu and Itaipu Parquetec in the World Climate Conference.
The stamp cancellation ceremony (marking the stamps with a special postmark featuring the launch date) was attended by Hilton Rogério Maia Cardoso, Business Director at Correios; Juliano Ribeiro Salgado, Chairman of the Board of Instituto Terra; Enio Verri, Brazilian Director-General of Itaipu; and Alexandre Leite, Director of Technologies at Itaipu Parquetec.

“Today we celebrate what is most genuine about Brazil: the ability to turn responsibility into action, and action into a legacy. Correios arrives in Belém with the same purpose that has driven us for over three centuries, which is to connect people, opportunities, and stories. And that is exactly what we are doing today by launching two stamps that reflect the spirit of this conference: unity and commitment to the planet,” said Cardoso.
“For us, it is an immense honor to receive this tribute,” said Juliano Salgado. “First, because it comes from Correios, this public company that provides such an important service, the only one that serves us at Instituto Terra. Likewise, being honored alongside Itaipu, this enormous reference for environmental restoration, is a very strong symbol for us.”
Sebastião Salgado, in addition to being one of the most renowned photographers in history, is recognized for his social and environmental work. In the 1990s, he and his wife, Lélia Wanick, founded Instituto Terra, and in 1998 they began restoring over 2,300 hectares of Atlantic Forest, planting 3.5 million native trees.

The stamp launch at Itaipu’s booth at COP30 is also a tribute to Sebastião Salgado, who visited the company to see firsthand its watershed recovery and Atlantic Forest protection initiatives. Itaipu’s protected areas total over 100,000 hectares of this biome in Brazil and Paraguay.
Director Enio Verri highlighted the importance of the Climate Conference for Itaipu. The company is a co-organizer and strategic partner of the Extraordinary Secretariat for COP30 (SECOP) and the Organization of Ibero-American States (OEI) in preparing the conference.
“In addition to generating clean, renewable, and affordable energy for Brazil and Paraguay, Itaipu has Itaipu Parquetec as its technological innovation arm, contributing to various initiatives for sustainability and the energy transition. And with the Itaipu ‘More than Energy’ program, we demonstrate that it is possible to implement environmental public policies while generating jobs and income. Today, in the context of climate change, development is linked to environmental preservation,” Verri added.

Postcards
COP30 participants who visit Itaipu’s booth in the Green Zone have the opportunity to send postcards from Belém. The postcards feature images of Belém captured by photographer Kiko Sierich and depict scenes of the capital of Pará related to Itaipu’s investments in preparation for the conference, such as the Nova Doca Linear Park; the revitalization of the São Brás and Ver-o-Peso markets; and environmental education initiatives in municipal public schools, among others. Visitors only need to choose the postcards, and the mailing is handled by Itaipu.
