Itaipu Binacional participates in the Brazil Pavilion program at the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP 29), which takes place in Baku, Azerbaijan, from November 11 to 22. The company brings to the Azerbaijani capital its experience in water resource preservation and investments in renewable energy.
On Wednesday, November 13, Itaipu’s Renewable Energy Superintendent, Rogério Meneghetti, will moderate the panel “The virtuous cycle of biogas in agri-food systems.” Legal Director Luiz Fernando Delazari will represent Itaipu Binacional as one of the panelists. Delazari will also participate in other panels on public policies for the inclusion of indigenous peoples and success stories in water resource management.
In Wednesday’s panel, biogas will be presented as an integrated solution for sustainability, transforming organic waste into natural fertilizers and electricity, thermal energy, or fuel, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, mitigating climate change, and promoting the circular economy.
The panel will also feature the Secretary of Climate, Energy, and Environment from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador André Corrêa do Lago; the Executive Director of the World Biogas Association, Charlotte Morton; Honorary Advisor to the Women in Biogas Network (Rede Mulheres do Biogás), Maria João Rolim; and Industrial Development Expert Fiona Skinner from the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO).
The discussion on the biogas cycle is aligned with the Brazil Pavilion’s theme at COP 29, which delivers the main message of “Paths to Ecological Transformation.” The aim is to showcase the country’s actions and contributions toward climate change mitigation and adaptation. This agenda is represented by two key plans from the Federal Government: the Ecological Transformation Plan (PTE) and the Climate Plan, led by the Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of the Environment.
The Pavilion is located in the Blue Zone of COP 29, along with other countries’ and organizations’ pavilions to promote discussions parallel to the diplomatic negotiations. It is here that all official sessions, meetings, parallel events, and press briefings are held during the Conference.
In 2025, Brazil will host the conference. COP 30 is scheduled for November in Belém, State of Pará.
